A Hero in Uzbekistan, an Ordinary Worker Abroad

When someone in Uzbekistan says they're going abroad, in many places they're immediately looked at differently. This is especially noticeable in small towns or villages. People say, "they're studying in Korea," "they went to America," "they're living abroad." As if it's already a certain level of achievement. As if this person has already accomplished something big. Sometimes people say this with respect, sometimes with a bit of envy. And without even realizing it, something starts growing inside that person too: "I'm different from everyone else."

But from the day you actually arrive abroad, you very quickly understand one thing. Here, you're not a hero. Here, you're an ordinary person.

A lone student at the airport

Here, nobody respects you for where you came from. Nobody values you just for "having come abroad." Everyone here is busy. Everyone is preoccupied with their own life. Everyone lives with their own problems. And suddenly you realize: here, only one thing defines you, what you're capable of.

How you work. How you learn. What kind of person you are.

That's the biggest lesson abroad teaches. Here, status disappears. Here, connections disappear. Here, the environment that used to lift you up disappears. Only one thing remains: your inner level.

A student at work

Sometimes people picture life abroad as romantic. Beautiful cities, big universities, a new life. But that's only the outside. The inside is different. Abroad is a test. Here, a person is left alone. Here, a person sees who they really are. Here, a person can't make excuses.

At home, there are many things holding a person up: family, acquaintances, an old familiar environment. Abroad takes all of that away. And that's when a question comes up: who are you, really?

That's why I came to understand one thing clearly.

Going abroad isn't an achievement.

It's just an opportunity.

Some people use that opportunity to completely change their life. They learn a language. They learn a profession. They broaden their worldview. Others just pass the time and come back with only a diploma.

The difference isn't in the place.

The difference is in the person.

Abroad doesn't change a person.

Abroad reveals a person.
